Before it was a charity, a committee worked with Liverpool City Council to accomplish the restoration campaign, as well as set up the Trust. It originally opened in 1896 with 3,710 flat panes of glass that were individually cut. In 1941, a bomb caused the glass to shatter, leaving only the main structure. It was opened again in the 1950s, almost demolished in the 1980s from lack of repairs, but then saved by grants in 1997 (which helped bring it to full restoration). The reopening was on September 6th, 2001.
