Hamswell House

Hamswell House offers a stunning setting for weddings, with beautiful gardens and the impressive backdrop of the house itself creating an ideal canvas for photographs. Guests can wander through the walled gardens, complete with pergola and terraced herb garden, before proceeding to the marquee for their wedding breakfast. The venue can accommodate up to 240 guests for a seated dinner.

The house boasts a rich history stretching back over a millennium. Hamswell was one of three manor houses in the parish of Cold Ashton granted to the Priors of Bath in AD 921 by Athelstan, the first king of all England. Following the dissolution of the monasteries in 1535, it passed to Sir Walter Denys, and later came under the ownership of the Whittington family, who held it for over 300 years from 1622 onwards. The estate witnessed the nearby Battle of Lansdown in 1643.

Throughout the twentieth century, notable residents included Lord Justice Maugham, the Lord Chancellor and brother of novelist Somerset Maugham, and Major General Sir Charles Bonham Carter, Governor of Malta. Today, the private home is occupied by Rupert and Victoria Legge and their family.
