The Story

Gildredge Manor is one of Eastbourne's most prestigious listed buildings, originally built in 1776 by Reverend Dr. Henry Lushington on the site of a former inn. This late Georgian masterpiece showcases architectural elegance with similarities to works by Sir Robert Taylor, and features typical Adam design elements including a charming Hermitage known as the Adam House within its grounds.
The manor's rich history spans centuries of distinguished ownership. Reverend Lushington's son Stephen sold the property to Charles Gilbert in 1792, where it remained in the family—later known as the Davies-Gilberts—until 1922. The estate's connection to the prominent Gildredge family, major landowners throughout Eastbourne, reflects its significance within the local community.
A contemporary 1787 description praised it as "the best house and gardens in this village and most delightfully situated, both for land and sea prospects." Today, Gildredge Manor's unique blend of historical significance and elegant appointments makes it an exceptionally versatile venue for weddings and celebrations, offering guests an unforgettable setting steeped in Georgian grandeur.
